Mathematics and the child!

Updated: Jul 23, 2019

Students have the tendency to view Mathematics as a task. Some students dislike Mathematics because they think it is impossible to understand. However, I think it is the way in which it is being taught that makes it difficult for students to understand. Therefore teachers should consider differentiating Mathematics Instructions. As we know the purpose of differentiated instructions is to engage our students in the learning environment using multiple means of representation, expression and engagement. Allowing students to express themselves in a way they feel most comfortable. Mathematics should be interactive and concrete evidence should be used to bring across its concept. Some students will prefer to draw, use concrete material, use written expression or even orally discuss their solution. Students should be allowed to do so in order to make meaningful contribution to the classroom. Instructions should be focused on the key concepts, instructional trajectory and the designing of open and parallel task. The curriculum does not make it easy for one to plan differentiated instructions however as good teachers we should tailor our instructions to fit the needs of our students while keeping our main focus on those key concepts which are to be taught. Designing open and parallel task allows inclusion of all students when it comes to their mathematical thinking. By using open task students are allowed to part take in the problem solving and new ideas will be generated, giving other students an opportunity to see a solution from their classmates view. The parallel task addresses students at different mathematical level. This too allows opportunity for both the strong students and the weak students. Some teachers fail to recognize students’ mathematical background. As teachers we should not only focus on the students who are mathematically inclined but also on those who are struggling. Developing the struggling students’ mathematical skills will help them to become mathematically incline as their peers. Let us all say YES to "Differentiated Mathematics Instructions".
